Inlays and onlays are used in a similar way to fillings to repair a damaged tooth.
Inlays work exactly like fillings but are used to repair a tooth with a larger surface area. This is normally your back teeth which have a much larger surface area for chewing. Onlays, however, are used to repair the outside or ‘cusp’ of the tooth – i.e. the visible part.
An onlay lies over the tooth and is used to help repair any damage to the shape of the tooth.
Like fillings, inlays and onlays can be made of a metal amalgam or a composite resin. They can also be made from porcelain.
